Perian is pretty good, but some users are experiencing strange issues with OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion, so this may not be the best solution until Perian is updated with full support for the latest versions of Mac OS X. It’s easy to install and acts as a preference pane, and once installed, you don’t need to use anything extra, just open the once unsupported videos in QuickTime Player. Perian is a third party Quick Time component that adds support for a wide variety of video formats (including MKV) to Apple’s own QuickTime Player.
Nonetheless, it still plays MKV files fairly well, if you are going to use it, drag the MKV video to the Plex icon to load the movie, otherwise trying to navigate Plex’s confusing new menus will get you likely to leave frustrated and lost. While overall a great media center app, the most recent update has taken a strange turn and the interface is more confusing than it needs to be. Plex is very similar to XBMC and also works.
To get the most out of XBMC, copy MKV video files to Movies folder in the users home folder and you can quickly find them in XBMC. Step 3 Start Converting MKV to iTunes Click the big Convert button. XBMC is another good app to play MKV video, its simple interface focuses on media usage, and it’s a great media console overall. The best thing about DivX Player is that its available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
